Yap Divers 4 Sharks

October 12th to 26th, 2019

Divers 4 Sharks Event

Special dives • presenting shark activist • daily shark conservation workshops • evening media presentations • photo contest • eco-tours • beach party • traditional village dance

Join us for two weeks learning about international shark conservation, while diving Yap. We have shark ecology presentations, photography workshops and an image contest – combined with all of our best dives and eco-tours, including a shark photo shoot during sunset at Vertigo.

Participants can attend daily workshop presentations, run exclusive dive plans, have meet and greet at Happy Hour with the presenters and hosts as well as watch media presentations at the Crow’s Nest bar by your event host, Paulo Guilherme, co-founder of Divers 4 Sharks.

We will be looking for all of Yap’s sharks in the water with dive plans that provide the best opportunities to encounter several species.

Attend a photography workshop and submit 2 images at the end of your trip to be judged in a photo contest with sponsor prizes.

See the best of Yap with eco-tours, a private beach bbq and a traditional village dance.

Shark Ecology Presenter

Penguim conservation presenter Paulo Guilherme, a Brazilian dive legend a.k.a. “Penguin” was born on 1969. As a result of medical orders he took to swimming at 8 years old, which led to a growing empathy between him and water, leading all the way to SCUBA diving. It was precisely due to his contact with the deep, in oceans and seas, that Penguin developed an enthusiasm towards marine wildlife, becoming one of its staunchest defenders and internationally recognized for his combative efforts to protect marine ecosystems.

Pengin is undoubtedly one of the most relevant environmental activists among the world´s diving professionals. Co founder of Divers for Sharks Campaign and founding Director of the Onda Azul Marine Studies Center. He was awarded the coveted Platinum Pro 5000 Award for more than 7,500 dives, at Dema in Las Vegas.

Shark Diving

Vertigo with bait & M’il channel/ridge: “Meet our resident reef sharks”
Guaranteed interaction with at least three species of reef sharks. Interact with Grey reef and Black tip reef sharks at Vertigo (photographer’s favorite), then drift M’il channel to observe white tip reef shark’s daytime behavior with schools of Jacks and Snapper.

Yap Caverns & Eagle’s Nest
Outer reef shark encounters. Most commonly found on the outer reef are Grey reef sharks and white tip reef sharks with infrequent encounters that include nurse sharks, silky sharks, tiger sharks, silvertips, hammer heads, leopard and (once) a whale shark. Visit a known shark cleaning station at Yap Caverns for possible behavior interactions.

Yap Corner and Vertigo until dusk
Guaranteed Grey reef and Black tip reef shark encounters in the afternoon just before sunset. Observe behavior changes as the sharks become more active at the end of the day. Stay and shoot sunset shark splits for the photography contest.

Magic Kingdom and Big Bend
Rare pelagic encounters that include Tiger and Silvertip sharks happen where the walls drop the deepest. Drift dive over a diverse hard coral forest with reef sharks, schools of fish, turtles, cleaning stations and chance encounters of larger pelagic sharks.

Southern Tip
Gilman and Lionfish walls afford divers the opportunity to see most of Yap’s shark and fish life. See reef sharks, turtles, pelagic fish and schools of fish with seasonal groups of juvenile Grey reef sharks.

We stayed at the hotel and dove with Manta Ray divers in early December 2017. The hotel is very comfortable, well run and staffed with wonderful employees. During our visit my wife came down with an illness and the consideration and support from the hotel and dive staff could not have been better.read more

The best place to stay in Yap. The resort is really nice and clean, the scuba diving is great, and the docked ship that houses the bar, restaurant, and movie screen is very cool. I really enjoyed my stay here.read more

The whole place centers around the scuba diving operation. Probably better to find somewhere else if you're not a diver. The dive operation was generally good, but a little too laid back - schedules weren't always clear, and sometimes would change without any notice. Sometimes it was hard to tell if this was really because of changing tides/weather or because of the island pace of life. Pizza is a surprisingly good option at the restaurant.read more
