Marine Biology Weeks
Eco-adventure for everyone! Divers, snorkelers and non-divers can learn about and help conserve precious coral reefs in an active workshop in Yap.
October 27th – November 9th, 2019
- What is Plankton? Where is it during the day?
- Which groups of organisms live in the sea?
- What is symbiosis and why is it important?
- How does a seastar walk?
- What is a coral reef’s food web?
- What are the today´s pressures on marine ecosystems?
Conserving our Ocean
The health of coral reefs is a sensitive barometer for the health of the ocean and planet. We are starting a long-term reef monitoring program that can help preserve our reefs. This eco-adventure vacation package is for everybody ages 6 and up, and also for knowledgeable nature lovers.
Divers, snorkelers and non-divers work in teams throughout the day taking samples of microfauna living on reef rock, in the sand or plankton – followed by microscope sessions. We begin with a 3-day “basic” Marine Biology Workshop, go ahead with a 2-day “advanced” workshop and end with a 2-day coral ID workshop. The focus of the basic workshop is coral reef ecology, mechanisms of reef building and erosion, structure and zonation, functional groups, food web, threats to coral reefs and preservation. During the “advanced” workshop we will take a closer look at species ID, species lists and some marine biological methods. Within the Coral ID workshop we will deal extensively with corals and you will be able to identify any hard coral down to genus level..
Everyone contributes to the common results and there are lectures in the evening on various topics of coral reefs. A marine biology quiz is on the schedule and participants also receive an interesting course file and certificate at the end of the course.

Coral reefs are so vast they can be seen from space, these complex and highly sensitive ecosystems are home to over 25% of all marine fish species. But there´s also a great microcosm to be explored: You will learn about the basis of the reef food chain which is essential for all bigger fish and animals that we enjoy as divers. Coral polyps are singular organisms, only a few millimeters in diameter, that create vast reef systems. We will learn about, study and experience our connection to the ocean from a biological perspective in an active all-ages vacation package.

As a biologist, diving instructor, UW photographer, Stephan Moldzio wants to inspire people under the spell of the underwater world. Since 2009 he has conducted marine biology workshops, reef check courses and a reef monitoring program.
Aquarist for more than 34 years, the free-lance marine biologist deals with coral propagation and offers various services around marine aquarium keeping.
Other subjects of interest are the climate system, the global material cycles and environmental protection.
Today and in the future marine ecosystems are exposed to a wide range of pressures. His concern is to inspire for the fascination of the seas and encourage to take action for their protection.
