Four languages are spoken in Yap State: Satawalese, Ulithian, Woleaian and Yapese. On the main island, people speak Yapese.

Pebai - Meeting house
Wunbey - Stone platform
Malal - Dancing ground
Ong - Traditional women's grass skirt
Thuw - Traditional men's loincloth
Mitmit - Traditional festival

In addition, some words are in common use throughout the Pacific, like Lava lava for the traditional wrap-around skirt worn by women on the outer islands.
