Some
things to note when going to Yap.
Travel Insurance
It's always a good idea to consider travel insurance when traveling to distant
destinations. Bags might be lost, flights might be delayed causing missed connections,
etc. A good insurance policy will greatly relieve any stress involved and help
you get your moneys worth during the journey.
Some companies we've
found offering travel insurance services online are Travel
Insurance Services, Travel
Guard and WorldTravelCenter.com.
Note that by mentioning those companies Manta Ray Bay Hotel does not in
any way endorse them. We haven't used their services and only refer to
them as options that might be worth exploring.
If you know of any other services that you think should be included, plese
tell us.
Entry formalities
Visas are not required for visits of 30 day's or less. Your stay can be extended
for up to 60 days upon expiration of your 30 day entry authorization. You must
have a valid passport or documentation of citizenship, an onward or return ticket
and proof of sufficient funds.
Clothing
Travel light as it never gets cold in Yap. Attire is very casual and formal
wear is considered unnecessary and impractical.
For men slacks and Hawaiian type shirts for formal occasions. Shorts or light
pants, loose shirts or T-shirts for normal wear. Sneakers, sandals or flip-flops
for footwear.
For women light cotton dress, skirts or sarongs with blouses or t-shirts are
the most comfortable way to dress.
In Yap, ladies often go topless which is common and socially accepted, but it
is considered very offensive for women to bare their thighs in public. These
restrictions do not apply anywhere within the Resort or when diving and sunbathing
on a private beach, but a wraparound should be worn when leaving those areas.
Currency
The official currency in Yap is the US Dollar and major credit cards are widely
accepted. There is an international bank, the Bank of the FSM, but no ATM machines.
Language
English is spoken and understood by nearly everyone.
Communication
IDD (International Direct Dial) calls can be made from the privacy of your room.
We also offer fax and e-mail services through the front office. Yap is part
of the US postal system but has its own stamps, which are collector's items.
Health Certification
No immunization is required unless coming from an infected area.
Custom allowances
Prohibited from import are certain plants, fruits, animals, narcotics and weapons.
Two bottles of liquor or wine, 20 cigars or 200 cigarettes may be brought in
duty free.
Medical Facilities
Yap State operates a 150-bed hospital that is well stocked and staffed. Medical
evacuation services are available to Manila and Guam. There is no malaria or
dengue fever in Yap and no vaccinations or inoculations are required for entry.
Electricity
Standard 110 Volt, 60 Cycle US type outlets are used throughout the hotel. A
220 Volt charging station is available at the Manta Ray Front Desk for people
needing to charge strobe batteries which require this voltage.
Water
In general, Yap's water complies with World Health Organization and US EPA Primary
Drinking Water Standards, and the Manta Ray Bay is equipped with its own filtration
system, making the water drinkable throughout the premises.
